Selective programs often look for students who can do more than memorize school material. Students may need to apply mathematics, understand unfamiliar reading passages, analyze information, reason through multi-step questions, and work accurately under time limits.
That means preparation should not be limited to repeatedly taking practice tests. A student who struggles with fractions, algebraic reasoning, vocabulary, inference, or multi-step problem solving may need to strengthen those skills before additional test practice becomes useful.

Each program has its own admissions process, academic expectations, and testing requirements. For that reason, preparation should be based on the student’s target program and the most current information available from that program.

Mathematics Preparation
Mathematics is often one of the most important areas for students applying to advanced academic programs. Successful preparation may require more than reviewing the student’s current grade-level homework.
A student may need to be comfortable working with arithmetic, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, integers, equations, geometry, patterns, data, and multi-step word problems. Depending on the student’s grade and target program, more advanced algebraic reasoning may also be appropriate.
We place particular emphasis on understanding how to approach an unfamiliar problem. Students should learn to identify what is being asked, determine which information matters, choose a reasonable strategy, and check whether the final answer makes sense.
Reading, Vocabulary and Reasoning
Strong reading comprehension is important because advanced admissions questions may require students to understand information quickly and make decisions based on what they have read.
Preparation can include main idea, supporting details, inference, vocabulary in context, author’s purpose, relationships between ideas, evidence, and interpretation of informational passages.
Students may also need practice distinguishing between an answer that sounds reasonable and an answer that is actually supported by the passage. This type of careful reasoning is useful not only for an admissions test but also for future advanced coursework.
Writing and Written Reasoning
If the admissions process includes written responses, students may need to express ideas clearly and efficiently. Good writing is not simply about using difficult vocabulary. The response should directly address the question, organize ideas logically, and support those ideas with appropriate explanation or evidence.
Preparation can therefore include paragraph organization, sentence clarity, grammar, transitions, supporting details, editing, and responding to a prompt within a limited amount of time.
Skill Building Before Repeated Practice Tests
Practice testing is useful because it helps students become familiar with timing, question styles, and the pressure of completing multiple sections. However, a practice test is most useful when the results are analyzed afterward.
If a student repeatedly misses ratio questions, inference questions, or multi-step algebra problems, simply taking another full test may reproduce the same result. It can be more productive to stop, strengthen that skill, practice it separately, and then return to mixed or timed testing.
A useful preparation cycle is: practice → review mistakes → identify the reason → strengthen the skill → practice again.
Preparation Should Match the Student
Students With Strong Academics
Some students already have strong school grades but need experience with unfamiliar reasoning questions, time limits, and more challenging applications of concepts they already know.
For these students, preparation may focus more heavily on advanced practice, efficiency, accuracy, and test familiarity.
Students With Skill Gaps
Other students may have strong potential but have specific weaknesses that make competitive testing difficult.
In this situation, preparation may need to spend more time on foundational math, reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, or problem-solving skills before concentrating on full-length practice tests.
When Should a Student Start Preparing?
There is no single preparation timeline that is right for every student. A student who already has strong foundational skills may need less time than a student who needs to review several earlier math or reading skills.
Starting earlier can provide more time to work on weaknesses gradually rather than trying to learn everything shortly before an admissions test. It also allows the student to balance preparation with regular schoolwork.
An initial assessment or review of the student’s current skills can help determine whether preparation should emphasize foundational learning, advanced practice, test strategy, or a combination of these.
